Hakodate Prefecture

Hakodate is located in the southern part of Hokkaido city. The night view from Mount Hakodate is one of the three largest night scenes in Japan that is particularly famous. There are many churches and Western-style buildings, possibly where Hakodate is the European city in the heart of Japan. Bay area, group of houses, red brick warehouse, thriving, bustling atmosphere like a port town.

Goryokaku Park: site of the final skirmish of the Boshin War. Goryokaku - the pentagonal star-shaped fortress - is one of only two surviving Western structures in Japan. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom all over Goryokaku.

Trappist Monastery: Japan's oldest Catholic monastery. Amidst the farmland and woodland at the westernmost tip of Hakodate Bay, the monks of Tobetsu Mind Training Monastery live their lives in a self-satisfied way with prayers and contemplation. Since the monastery is a self-contained community, visitors can only get a glimpse of monastic life, but the beautiful surroundings make Tobetsu still a place worth a visit.

Tachimachi Cape: Cape Tachimachi is a cape located southeast of Mount Hakodate. Because it is located on a cliff facing the Tsugaru Strait, the scenery here on a sunny day is so beautiful, you can see the distant horizon.

In the summer, Hokkaido's flowers are in full bloom at Hamanasu Park. A monument to Yosano Tekkan - a famous singer of the Meiji period - and his wife, Akiko, was also built here.
